What is gastric bypass?
Gastric bypass is a type of weight loss surgery that works by bypassing a portion of the stomach and intestine so you eat less food and absorb fewer calories as well. It's the most frequently performed weight loss surgery in the U.S. You may have heard it referred to as laparoscopic bypass surgery or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. The procedure is considered to be both restrictive, meaning it limits how much you can eat, and malabsorptive, meaning it reduces how many calories that can be absorbed.
How is gastric bypass performed?
The procedure involves two stages. In the first stage, the stomach is divided into a larger and smaller section. The smaller section is a pouch about the size of a golf ball and will serve as the new stomach. The larger lower section will be bypassed so food will not enter it. Because the smaller section can only hold about an ounce or so of food, you'll “fill up” faster and won't consume or absorb as many calories. After the pouch is separated from the lower portion of the stomach, it will be attached to the small intestine. The procedure uses several small incisions and is performed on an outpatient basis.
Am I a good candidate for Roux-en-Y bypass surgery?
Gastric bypass surgery may be a good choice for patients who:
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above;
- Have a BMI between 35 and 40 as well as any additional obesity-related issues such as type II diabetes or high blood pressure
- Are in good general health
A comprehensive physical exam and review of prior medical history will be performed before any procedure to ensure gastric bypass surgery is the best choice for your needs and goals.
